Establishment of Upper Bounds for Internet Round Trip Message Latency

چکیده
In this paper, we introduce a framework which can be used for establishing an upper bound on message latency, suitable for construction of Internet-based partially synchronous overlay networks. We propose two network filters for estimating the network states and implement them along with the five other network estimators proposed by other researchers. We monitor various Internet paths by measuring the Round Trip Time (RTT) and implement two different variable upper bound techniques which vary the bound according to the network state. The first technique computes the bound by calculating the product of some constant times the estimated RTT value, where as the second technique introduces a semi-upper bound region to determine the upper bound. We measure the performance of our system by using a five-metric evaluation model and show that the semi-upper bound technique along with the two proposed network filters exhibits better performance and can be effectively used for estimating upper bound on message latency. Finally, we use the phase-plot technique to determine the quality of the path and show that a low upper bound is sufficient for high quality paths.

Modeling TCP Latency
Several analytic models describe the steady-state throughput of bulk transfer TCP flows as a function of round trip time and packet loss rate. These models describe flows based on the assumption that they are long enough to sustain many packet losses. However, most TCP transfers across today’s Internet are short enough to see few, if any, losses and consequently their performance is dominated b...
متن کاملAnalysis of Sources of Latency in Downloading Web Pages
Why does it take so long to download a Web page from a Web server? We analyze the download latency for pages for a variety of situations, in which Web browser and server are both within the same country as well as in different countries. Our study examines several sources of latency in accessing Web pages: DNS, TCP, the Web server itself, and the network links and routers. We divide the total d...
متن کاملOn Modeling Round-Trip Time Dynamics of the Internet Using System Identification
Understanding the end-to-end packet delay dynamics of the Internet is of crucial importance since it directly affects the QoS (Quality of Services) of realtime services, and it enables us to design an efficient congestion control mechanism. In this paper, we measure the round-trip time, and build a mathematical model representing its dynamics using system identification. We first measure, as th...
متن کاملMessage Futures: Fast Commitment of Transactions in Multi-datacenter Environments
Geo-replication of large Internet services is increasingly deployed for better data locality and fault tolerance. Maintaining consistency across datacenters is expensive and requires wide-area communication. This renders current solutions to either settle for weaker forms of consistency or suffer from large delays. In this work we present Message Futures, a strongly consistent concurrency contr...
